Abstract

|
In this paper, an investigation was performed to select the precursors of mutagenic by chlorination of aqueous solution of pharmaceuticals and to trace the change of the mutagenicity with time.
When fructose and glucose was used as the precursor of chlorination, Ames mutagenicity was not detected. However, humic acid and tyrosine showed mutagenicity as reported in the literature. The mutagenicity in the chlorination procedure was maximum at the beginning of the reaction and decreased with time. Acetaminophen which has similar chemical structure as tyrosine showed mutagenicity at a concentration level of 1/100 of the extract from an aqueous reaction mixture of TOC:Cl=1:1, but aspirin, furosemide, reserpine, dexamethasone showed positive at levels of 1 to 1/40.
